The Black Queen - 2.5" x 2.5" (6.35 cm x 6.35 cm) Copyright ©1997 Marvel Characters Inc. Wizards of the Coast (TSR at the time I worked on it) made a dice combat game based on characters from the Marvel Comics Universe. The image of a hero or villain was engraved on one die face, and a symbolic representation of the character's powers were engraved on the other die faces. My responsibility was design the overall look for the dice art, then create the icons used for the individual faces. The first challenge was to establish the relationship between the iconic die image and the comic book character without necessarily requiring that the player refer to a game manual. We wanted the player to look at an image and say "That's Wolverine!" or "That's Professor X." This had to be done within the tolerance standards of the dice manufacturing process ... which couldn't guarantee that fine detail would would show up on the finished die. The second challenge was to work within those production restrictions to create icons that were also percievably different from the Dragon Dice Line. [ART & ILLUSTRATION]
